Mission and role

The Head of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Protection is responsible for the strategic and operational management of all activities related to occupational safety, health- and environmental protection.

The objective of this role is to support safe, compliant, and sustainable operations through the implementation and continuous improvement of an integrated EHS management system.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Organization

  • Lead the EHS department
  • Provide disciplinary and functional leadership to team members
  • Develop and optimize EHS organizational structures and processes
  • Manage the EHS department budget

EHS Management System

  • Implement, maintain, and continuously improve the EHS management system
  • Design & Implement processes which comply with corporate policies as well as national and international Regulatory requirements
  • Take a leading role in the development of a strong safety culture

Occupational Health and Safety

  • Fulfill responsibilities in accordance with occupational safety legislation
  • Advise management and employees on workplace safety and accident prevention
  • Lead the site risk management program
  • Support incident investigations and identification and implementation of corrective actions
  • Plan and deliver training and safety awareness programs

Environmental Protection

  • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations
  • Manage permitting processes and liaise with authorities
  • Lead programs for emissions monitoring and responsible waste management
  • Lead the development and implementation environmental and sustainability strategies and support responsible resource utilization

Fire Protection

  • Ensure compliance with local fire protection requirements
  • Manage permitting processes and liaise with authorities
  • Support site compliance with global and insurer loss-prevention policies and standards

Audits and Reporting

  • Plan and conduct internal audits and support external audits and inspections
  • Track and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)
  • Prepare EHS reports and provide regular updates to senior management

Communication and Stakeholder Management

  • Act as key contact for authorities, insurers, and external partners
  • Collaborate closely with production, engineering, quality, HR and workers council
  • Lead the EHS committees and meetings process

Who are we looking for

Qualifications

  • Degree in chemistry, applied sciences, safety engineer or a comparable field
  • Certification as an Occupational Safety Specialist (Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit)
  • Certification as fire protection expert (Brandschutzbeauftragter) would be an advantage
  • Qualifications in environmental management related topics would be an advantage

Professional Experience

  • 10 years of experience in EHS, preferably in pharmaceutical environment
  • 5 years leadership experience in a similar role
  • Knowledge of national chemical control legislations, e.g. ChemG, GefStoffV

Technical Competencies

  • Extensive knowledge of German work safety legislation and governmental regulations, including their application (e.g. installations requiring approval, hazardous substances, machinery safety, workplace regulations).
  • Experience with management systems (e.g., EMAS, ISO 14001, ISO 45001)
  • Experience working with regulatory authorities and audits

Personal Competencies

  • Drive and maintain a strong safety culture
  • Act as an interface between operational activities and corporate strategy
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, solve technical problems, lead projects, and work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Advanced communication and presentation skills in both English and German, written and spoken
  • Ability to work effectively within a global matrix organization
  • Capability to monitor and communicate progress toward goals
  • Excellent customer relationship skills, both internally and externally
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to develop practical solution.
  • Ability to accurately interpret regulations and requirements
  • Proven success in implementing and managing comprehensive environmental, health, safety and sustainability programs
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365
