The Position

At Roche, we thrive to deliver more benefits to our patients as part of our 10-year Pharma vision. An integral part of achieving this vision is to deliver new and innovative data analytics solutions to our scientists across Pharma Technical Operations (PT). PT Digital and Operational Excellence (PTE) was created to drive digital transformation and streamline the organization. PTE leads the global development and execution of PT’s Digital and Operational Excellence strategy, building a strong, inclusive community. It empowers people with data, develops Lean and Digital skills, and scales up Digital and Advanced Analytics solutions for the benefit of colleagues and patients.

We aim to activate data citizenship and digital mind, revolutionize our FAIR data ecosystem and systems landscape, re-design excellent processes, and generate transformative insights. We collaborate closely with global functions to deliver impactful value to our patients.

We're looking for a motivated intern to transform an early prototype, inspired by OpenCPU, into a full-fledged Python-based software product. Similar to how OpenCPU provides a web API for statistical computing environments for R, you'll develop a robust Python calculation engine. This will make sophisticated Python models easily accessible and scalable within our global analytics platform, empowering scientists and accelerating patient insights. Your work will involve developing production-ready code, documentation, and containerized deployment.

The Opportunity:

  • Finalize and extend an existing prototype of a Python-based OpenCPU-style system

  • Develop and enhance execution aspects such as functional state, error handling, and dependency injection.

  • Package the system for deployment (e.g., Docker container)

  • Write clear documentation for developers and users

Who you are:

  • You are enrolled at university (Master's) program in Computer Science, Informatics, Software Engineering or a comparable program.

  • You have strong software development skills in Python.

  • You have experience with web server concepts (e.g., Flask, Apache, CGI, etc.).

  • You have familiarity with Docker or other container technologies (e.g., Podman, CRI-O).

  • You have familiarity with R and/or abstract computation problems (a plus).

  • You have good written and spoken English skills.

  • You enjoy working in a team, especially in an international context with the ability to work independently.

This role calls for a collaborative, open-minded individual who values learning from colleagues, thoughtfully challenges ideas, and prioritizes impactful work. We seek someone who thrives in a dynamic environment, has a passion for continuous learning, and can be relied upon to work in the best interest of the team.

Your application:

Please upload your resume and add a link to your GitHub/GitLab profile (or relevant code samples). We're keen to see your practical experience!

Please note, that you must be enrolled at university (Master's) program during the whole period of the internship . We are not accepting applications of students, who already finished their Master's study and are no longer enrolled at the university. The ideal duration for this internship is between 6 to 12 months and we are flexible to discuss durations based on your academic requirements and project needs.

Please include your desired start date and whether you intend to pursue this as an internship or your final thesis project.
