Head of Occupational Safety Germany

Biberach, Germany

The Position

Take full responsibility for the strategic and operational Occupational Safety Management across all German sites, working closely with all EHS departments and business partners, including production plants. In this highly visible core function, you will serve as the managerial Safety Representative for all German legal entities, ensuring direct interaction with the German Executive Board.

This position can be filled in Ingelheim or Biberach.

Tasks & responsibilities

  • In this role, you will lead and continuously drive the strategic and operational improvement of Occupational Safety Management across all German sites, ensuring full compliance with national legislation and corporate EHS requirements, including the maintenance of ISO 45001 certification.
  • You will define, implement, and monitor KPI‑driven safety objectives that will enhance accident prevention, reduce risks, and strengthen the overall safety culture through data‑based performance management.
  • A key part of your role will be to develop, harmonize, and optimize state‑of‑the‑art safety and product safety processes, tools, and governance standards in close collaboration with business partners such as Production, Innovation, and Engineering.
  • You will ensure robust product safety oversight by evaluating risks, defining control measures, and supporting cross‑functional teams in all product safety–related processes throughout the lifecycle.  
  • Leveraging your leadership excellence in this role, you will drive engagement, behavioral safety initiatives, and human‑factors‑based improvements that will strengthen Boehringer’s safety culture and ensure effective training and competency development.
  • In addition, you will provide expert guidance on Occupational Safety and Product Safety in all major CAPEX projects, ensuring that design, engineering, construction, and commissioning activities fully comply with legal and corporate EHS requirements and integrate ISO 45001‑aligned risk‑management principles.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Natural Science or Engineering and completed qualification as an Occupational Safety Specialist (Sicherheitsfachkraft / SiFa) or an equivalent legally recognized certification enabling fulfillment of statutory responsibilities in Germany
  • Proven leadership and change‑management capabilities, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive safety‑culture transformation in complex organizational environments
  • Strong project management skills, particularly in coordinating cross‑functional safety or CAPEX‑related projects and ensuring structured, on‑time execution
  • Hands‑on operational experience in Occupational Safety, ideally gained in production, manufacturing, chemical, logistics, or other high‑risk industrial environments.
  • Deep knowledge of German occupational safety legislation, relevant DGUV regulations, and corporate EHS governance frameworks
  • In‑depth understanding of ISO 45001 (implementation, auditing, continuous improvement) with demonstrated experience operating certified OH&S management systems
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and communication skills, enabling effective risk assessment, decision‑making, and cross‑functional collaboration (e.g., Production, Engineering, Quality, HR)
  • Fluency in English and German
