Associate Principal Scientist (m/f/d)
Bayer is looking for a highly creative and motivated biochemist / biologist / bio(techno)logist / pharmacist (m/f/d) to join Bayer’s Protein Science and Biophysics sub-cluster within Drug Discovery Sciences, Wuppertal, Germany. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of highly skilled scientists within the R&D organization and contribute to the discovery and engineering of innovative protein therapeutics and tools. Located in the Protein Science and Biophysics sub-cluster, you will closely collaborate with colleagues from Therapeutic Antibodies, Biology and Assay, High-throughput Biology and Chemical Biology, Imaging and Omics as wells as Pharmacology and Early Research within Pharma R&D in Germany and the US. Our new operating model “Dynamic Shared Ownership” will allow you to generate maximum impact, focus on what is important and innovate in an agile and collaborative way.
YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Be responsible for the protein production including protein design, expression, purification, modification, analysis and on-time delivery of high-quality proteins (antibodies, bi- and multi-specifics, Fc-fusion proteins, recombinant proteins) using state-of-the-art internal capacities or coordinating external CROs
- Leverage your expertise to advance the lab and team in protein science and biophysics, ensuring we remain at the forefront of the field. This includes optimizing existing workflows and developing new, innovative technologies to enhance our research capabilities
- Interact with a team of highly skilled technical research associates and scientist at different levels in the field of protein science, protein biology and therapeutic antibodies
- Contribute to our digital agenda by optimizing workflows and generate and analyze data in collaboration with AI/ML experts to foster in silico experimentation
- Use your expertise in drug discovery sciences and disease areas (oncology, cardiovascular, renal and immunology) to represent Drug Discovery Sciences in cross-disciplinary, global teams to propose, manage, and drive internal therapeutic research projects or external collaborations
- Be accountable in cross-functional teams to select, design and deliver high quality compounds along the drug discovery value chain from target validation to the identification of a preclinical candidate with shared responsibility for project and development candidate goals throughout the discovery process in line with timelines and budget
- Be accountable for the supply of high-quality proteins suitable for multiple purposes that meet requirements of different stages along the drug discovery process in a modality agnostic project pipeline (eg HT screening, in vitro and in vivo assays, structural biology)
- Contribute to self-empowered matrix teams in-line with Bayer’s VACC leadership standards (Visionary, Architect, Catalyst, Coach) by enabling, empowering, and supporting colleagues in a high-performance environment under a culture of psychological safety
- Taking ownership and foster a culture of ownership in support of the strategy and in line with Bayer’s values; empowers others and drives peer accountability across portfolio deliverables and beyond
WHO YOU ARE
- Highly motivated individual (m/w/d) with PhD in biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, pharmacy or related field and long-term leadership experience
- Experience with biophysical methods to describe protein-protein interactions and key parameters of protein integrity (e.g. SEC-MALS, ITC, DLS, DSF, SPR). Basic knowledge of structural biology and design-function relationship is of advantage
- Strong knowledge and experience in conducting research to understand the structure, properties and function of proteins
- Good understanding of the biotherapeutics drug discovery process and experienced at working in a modality agonistic environment
- Knowledge (e.g. target biology) in Bayer´s key disease areas oncology, cardiovascular, renal and immunology
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, willingness and ability to work successfully in diverse, high-performing teams and collaborate in a mission-focused, multidisciplinary environment
- High learning agility and excellent self-organization skills
- High degree of commitment as well as ability to take action for continuous improvement
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken combined with excellent communication and presentation skills
