Bench Scientist Industrial Biocatalysis (m/f/d)

Join our dynamic Bioprocess Solutions team at Bayer Crop Science in Leverkusen and become part of an international, cross-divisional and cross-continental biotechnology project. Your contribution will enable us to establish innovative biotechnological solutions that reduce the cost of existing and future products for our customers and facilitate the biocatalytic synthesis of the key building blocks of novel pharmaceuticals and crop protection reagents. YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • You will be part of scientific projects focused on evaluating and developing enzymatic solutions to challenges in modern industrial processes, ranging from reducing costs to evaluating novel biosynthetic approaches. These activities will be in the framework of the Bayer-internal innovation program “Life Science Collaboration”.
  • Collaborating closely with international, cross-functional project teams and communities to integrate biotechnological solutions into R&D and production pipelines. This involves engaging with colleagues from data science, analytics, plant and chemical biotechnology, biology, chemistry, engineering and production.
  • Designing and executing scientific experiments with defined objectives, working both independently and in collaboration while adhering to laboratory safety and compliance standards.
  • You will independently plan, coordinate, conduct, evaluate, document and present the scientific progress of projects, ensuring clear communication of results and insights.
  • Driving the development of new concepts and innovations in biotransformation process solutions through collaboration with internal and external partners is also your responsibility.

WHO YOU ARE

  • You have completed a PhD in organic chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology or a related discipline, and have several years of relevant experience.
  • You have a strong scientific track record and exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • You contribute several years of robust scientific and experimental expertise in synthetic and preparative organic chemistry, as well as biocatalysis and/or chemoenzymatic synthesis involving various enzyme classes.
  • Your proficiency in analytical methods such as HPLC, GC and MS is evident, and prior experience in industrial process development and scale-up would be a valuable asset.
  • You are familiar with molecular biology and microbiological techniques; experience in the cultivation and fermentation of microorganisms would be an advantage.
  • Your digital mindset is evident.
  • You possess effective and adaptable communication skills and demonstrate a strong commitment to building relationships across functions and countries. You actively seek input from others and solve interdisciplinary challenges.
  • Excellent proficiency in English (written and spoken) rounds off your profile, knowledge of German is a plus.

SCOPE

This is a fixed-term contract for 24 months, commencing on January 1st, 2025. Location: Bayer AG, Crop Science Division, Leverkusen, Germany
