Bench Scientist Synthetic Biology (all genders)
Join our dynamic Bioprocess Solutions team at Bayer Crop Science in Leverkusen, where your contributions will help us deliver cost-effective biotech-based processes for our pharmaceutical and crop protection products. In this role, you will be part of an interdisciplinary and cross-divisional team developing Synthetic Biology tools and applications closely connected to our pipelines. YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- You will be responsible for establishing novel synthetic biology approaches in microbial cells including bacteria and yeasts aiming to improve protein production
- Your activities will include the design and evaluation of genetic circuits
- You will perform characterization of the developed strains in different bioreactor scales and make use of our automated bioprocess platform
- You design and execute scientific experiments with defined objectives, working both independently and in collaboration while adhering to laboratory safety and compliance standards
- You independently plan, coordinate, conduct, evaluate, document, and present the scientific progress of projects, ensuring clear communication of results and insights
- You work in a network of interdisciplinary and international teams in pharma and crop science, including molecular biologists, biochemical engineers, computational scientists and machine learning experts to integrate findings and share insights
- You collaborate with external academic partners to leverage expertise in yeast genetics and synthetic biology
WHO YOU ARE
- You have completed a PhD in Synthetic Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or a related discipline accompanied by a strong scientific track record and exceptional problem-solving skills
- You contributed several years of robust scientific and experimental expertise in genetic engineering techniques
- You have experience with genetic circuit design or metabolic engineering is highly desirable, particularly in yeast species
- You are proficient in data analysis tools and software for modeling biological systems
- You have a digital mindset and good knowledge of laboratory automation
- You possess effective and adaptable communication skills, demonstrating a strong commitment to building relationships across functions, actively seeking input from others, and solving interdisciplinary challenges
- Excellent proficiency in English (written and spoken) rounds off your profile
SCOPE
This is a fixed-term contract for 24 months, starting on January 1st, 2026. Location: Bayer AG, Crop Science division, Leverkusen, Germany
